Germany recorded 1,926 attacks targeting Muslims during the past year of 2023, with a civil coalition warning that racism against Muslims has become socially acceptable in the country.
This comes from the annual report compiled by the Coalition Against Islamophobia and Anti-Muslim Racism (CLAIM), headquartered in Germany and supported by the Ministry of Family Affairs.
According to the report published today, Monday, nearly 90 attacks targeted places such as mosques, Muslim cemeteries, and restaurants.
The attacks against Muslims in Germany in 2023 showed an increase of 114% compared to the previous year in 2022.
The report highlighted this increase as “extremely alarming,” emphasizing that there are more cases that go unreported.
A total of 679 anti-Muslim incidents were recorded between October 7 and December 31, 2023.
It was noted that the attacks escalated after October 7, possibly influenced by the Israeli war on Palestinians in Gaza.
The report indicated that 66% of documented cases were verbal attacks such as insults, threats, and slander.
Director of the Coalition Against Islamophobia and Anti-Muslim Racism, Rima Hanano, emphasized that the significant increase in attacks and discrimination against Muslims in 2023 is deeply concerning, according to the report.
She stated, “Streets, buses, and mosques have not been safe places for Muslims or those perceived to be Muslims for a long time.”
Hanano pointed out that racism against Muslims has become more socially acceptable than ever before and has found a place in society.
