On his first day in office, President-elect Donald Trump has prepared an agenda set to take effect immediately after assuming the presidency on January 20th.
Trump’s unconventional plan includes a series of bold policies that reflect his clear opposition to the approaches taken by Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration.
Ranging from strict legal measures to extensive government restructuring, these actions raise questions about how they will withstand potential legal and logistical challenges.
Here are the key actions Trump has pledged to undertake from day one of his presidency:
1. Pardoning Capitol Attack Defendants
Since the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters, over 1,500 individuals have been charged. Trump has promised to pardon many of these individuals, referring to them as “extraordinary patriots.”
As President, Trump would have the authority to pardon individuals convicted in federal courts, including those involved in the Capitol attack.
2. Mass Deportation of Immigrants
A major priority for Trump is revamping immigration policies. He has vowed to implement the largest deportation program in U.S. history, focusing on individuals with criminal backgrounds and those who entered the country illegally. Trump plans to leverage the “Alien Enemy” Act to facilitate deportations, a move that could require substantial military support and resources.
3. Dismissing Federal Government Employees
In a bid to eliminate what he calls the “deep state,” Trump intends to remove a number of federal employees by revoking their job protections. He aims to reinstate a 2020 executive order that would reclassify certain federal positions as political, making it easier to terminate those employees.
4. Rolling Back Transgender Protections in Schools
Trump has committed to reversing several Biden administration policies protecting the rights of transgender students. This includes rescinding “Title IX” provisions that prevent discrimination in schools. Additionally, Trump may cut federal funding for schools promoting concepts like “Critical Race Theory” or supporting transgender rights.
5. Imposing Tariffs on Imported Goods
Among Trump’s economic promises is the imposition of heavy tariffs on imported goods, especially from China and Mexico. Trump claims this policy will protect American jobs and reduce the trade deficit, with some tariffs potentially reaching as high as 25% on specific products.
6. Ending the Ukraine War
One of Trump’s most controversial pledges is to end the Russia-Ukraine war within a single day of taking office. He has expressed confidence in his ability to bring both parties to the negotiating table and quickly find a resolution, making it a top foreign policy priority.
