Hebrew media outlets have reported that the Israeli Ministry of Defense is expanding its use of fiber-optically guided drones in collaboration with private companies, drawing lessons from the ongoing war in Ukraine. This technology is being integrated into Israel’s military systems to address challenges posed by Hamas and Hezbollah, particularly in tunnel warfare.
Lessons from Ukraine
According to Israel’s Channel 12, “Although drones are used for various purposes in the current war, the overall vision for their deployment is heavily influenced by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which has transformed traditional understandings of drone capabilities, ranges, and applications. Fiber-optically guided drones, in particular, are proving effective for both visible and covert operations.”
The report highlighted that the Israeli army, much like the forces in Ukraine, is utilizing fiber optics in its current operations, albeit in distinct ways. “Hamas and Hezbollah’s tunnels lack wireless communication capabilities, so Israel has connected drones and robotic dogs to fiber-optic systems for improved operation within these environments.”
Advantages and Limitations
Fiber-optically guided drones used in Ukraine have achieved operational ranges of up to 10 kilometers. However, according to Channel 12, these systems face significant limitations. The main challenges include reduced speed and limited maneuverability, as fiber-optic operation demands high precision to avoid cable disconnections. Additionally, the drones’ operational time is shorter compared to their wireless counterparts.
Despite these drawbacks, fiber-optically guided drones are praised for their key advantages:
-
- Resistance to electronic warfare systems.
-
- Enhanced capability for underground operations, such as navigating tunnels.
-
- Avoidance of frequency jamming.
However, their limitations—short range, slow speed, and weak maneuverability—pose challenges that restrict their broader application.
Iranian Drones and Challenges from Hezbollah
In June, Ukraine offered assistance to Israel in dealing with Iranian drones, which have been used extensively in the region.
The Haaretz newspaper noted that the Israeli military has admitted to significant difficulties in countering drones launched by Hezbollah. These drones have proven to be a persistent challenge, with many successfully hitting their targets. Even with helicopters often deployed to intercept them, the Israeli army has struggled to fully neutralize this threat.
Shifting Tactics
The adoption of fiber-optic technology reflects a shift in Israel’s military strategy to address the unique challenges posed by Hamas and Hezbollah’s tunnel networks and the increasing sophistication of drone warfare in the region. While the new systems offer innovative solutions, their limitations underline the complexity of modern military confrontations.
