An Israeli battalion commander has revealed significant challenges facing the Israeli army in its combat efforts against Hezbollah, particularly obstacles impeding its advance in the villages and towns of southern Lebanon.
Speaking to Maariv, Lieutenant Colonel Elad Tzuri, commander of the 7th Tank Battalion, highlighted the difficult conditions his forces are encountering on the frontlines, especially during the winter season. Harsh weather, he said, has greatly limited the army’s ability to make progress.
Winter Compounds Tactical Challenges
Tzuri explained that his unit has been attempting to maneuver from the settlement of Metula toward the Hula Valley in southern Lebanon. However, rough terrain combined with winter weather conditions is making the task extremely difficult.
“Our battalion continuously inspects the paths where tanks and engineering vehicles move to prevent them from sinking or skidding in the mud,” Tzuri said.
Despite the strength of the Merkava tank, he noted that it remains vulnerable to the unstable ground. “The tank could sink, slip, or overturn if the path collapses,” he added, emphasizing the significant time and effort required to ensure safe passage.
Severe Weather Complicates Operations
The commander described the harsh weather his forces are enduring. “Yesterday morning, heavy rain fell in the area where our battalion is fighting. By the evening, the cold was biting. While we are well-equipped, the cold is intense,” he said.
The combination of these conditions not only affects mobility but also impacts morale and operational efficiency.
Call for Political Action
Tzuri underscored the importance of a political solution alongside military efforts. “Political action always complements military action. In general, wars end this way. The decision to stop the war lies with the politicians, while our mission is to expand and deepen the front to achieve tangible gains,” he stated.
Claims of Tactical Success Against Hezbollah
Tzuri claimed that the ground operation has had a significant impact on Hezbollah’s capabilities. “We are damaging Hezbollah’s assets on the ground in meaningful ways. We are clearing buildings and uncovering Hezbollah’s tools and strategies. Recently, we’ve seen a reduction in rocket launches toward Israel,” he asserted.
He described the mission as focused on “removing the threat and weakening Hezbollah’s capabilities in the area.”
Hezbollah’s Resilience Amid Israeli Struggles
While Tzuri painted a picture of operational success, analysts and resistance supporters question the extent of the Israeli army’s achievements. Hezbollah’s ability to adapt to adverse conditions, maintain its presence, and strike effectively highlights its strategic depth and resilience in southern Lebanon.
For Hezbollah, winter and rugged terrain are not merely obstacles but conditions under which its fighters thrive, leveraging their familiarity with the region and their deeply entrenched positions. This dynamic often neutralizes the technological advantages of the Israeli military.
