“During my teenage years, I was like a bull in a china shop,” says Persephone Rizvi, recalling her tumultuous youth. Her weekends revolved around parties, drinks, and the frantic planning of what to wear and where to pre-drink before heading to the clubs. Nights stretched into the early hours, followed by house parties, and mornings came with pounding headaches from excessive alcohol consumption.
Fights, cigarette ash, and hangovers were part of the routine until Persephone hit a breaking point. Realizing her life had become unsustainable, she found herself on a path she hadn’t anticipated: converting to Islam.
A Path Born of Curiosity
Persephone’s life began to change during a university summer job at a call center, where she met Halima, a Muslim colleague. Wanting to challenge herself, she decided to join Halima in fasting during Ramadan.
At first, it wasn’t about faith but rather a personal test of endurance. “It was a 30-day challenge, and my ego told me, ‘You can do this,’” she recalls.
Initially, Persephone continued to party and drink while fasting, but as the days went by, she began reflecting on her actions and questioning her lifestyle. “I started thinking, ‘I’m better than this. My worth is more than this,’” she says.
The discipline of fasting introduced her to feelings of gratitude and self-care that she hadn’t experienced before. Ramadan became the key that opened the door to Islam.
A Hidden Journey
Growing up, Persephone’s parents had given her and her sister a basic understanding of faith, sending them to Sunday school, but religion was never imposed. Her father, a Black British man, had a Christian upbringing, while her mother emphasized learning about spirituality without enforcing it.
During her first year at university, Persephone began researching Islam in earnest, though she kept her interest hidden from her family. She divided her time between studying in Salford and visiting her parents in Huddersfield, all while contemplating converting.
One day, she burst into her family’s home, wearing a hijab, and announced, “I’m a Muslim now!”
Her parents were shocked but not angry. They asked many questions to ensure she had made the right decision, but ultimately, they respected her choice.
Embracing Change
Adopting Islam meant more than just a change in belief—it transformed her entire lifestyle. She cleared out her wardrobe of outfits she deemed inappropriate, removed her long artificial nails, and deleted social media photos that no longer reflected her values.
Wearing the hijab brought an unexpected sense of freedom. “I no longer get catcalled,” she explains. “In the past, walking to university meant being stopped by men five times in 10 minutes. Now, no one bothers me.”
Persephone took her shahada (declaration of faith) during a visit to Eccles Mosque in Salford. Initially, she only intended to ask questions, but the imam encouraged her to repeat after him, and before she knew it, she was officially a Muslim.
Building a New Support System
The Muslim community welcomed Persephone with open arms, and she formed lifelong friendships with other Muslim women. “They’ve shown me what true sisterhood looks like,” she says. These relationships became her strongest support system, offering her comfort and encouragement during difficult times.
Struggles and Redemption
Adjusting to her new faith wasn’t without challenges. Persephone faced moments of doubt and even relapsed into old habits, including drinking, during her early days as a Muslim.
One such incident involved a night of excessive drinking that left her unconscious on her kitchen floor. “I woke up feeling like I was in hell,” she recalls. This wake-up call solidified her determination to change.
Persephone credits Islam with saving her life. “Now I know how to handle tough times through prayer and self-care. I wouldn’t have been able to cope without Islam,” she says.
Today, Persephone is unwavering in her faith, finding peace and purpose in her spiritual journey. “Mistakes don’t define your commitment to faith,” she reflects. “Islam gave me the tools to rebuild my life.”
The Power of Islam
Persephone Rizvi’s story is featured in a BBC Three documentary exploring how Islam transformed her life. Her journey from chaos to clarity underscores the power of faith to heal, guide, and provide meaning, even in the most unlikely of circumstances.
