Israeli researcher Anat Hochberg emphasized that despite mounting U.S. pressure, Saudi Arabia remains steadfast in its strategic maneuvering, particularly regarding the normalization agreement with the Israeli occupation.
In an article published by the Hebrew newspaper Maariv, Hochberg noted that while the prospects for normalization with Saudi Arabia currently appear slim, this presents Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with an opportunity to maneuver between regional players and assert leadership in the Middle East.
Saudi Firmness in the Face of U.S. Pressure
Hochberg explained that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks about Washington’s control over Gaza triggered outrage across the Arab world, including in Saudi Arabia.
In response, the Saudi Foreign Ministry issued a firm statement rejecting Trump’s claims, making it clear that Riyadh will not establish diplomatic ties with Israel without the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The Israeli researcher also pointed out that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s unwavering commitment to the creation of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Riyadh’s Diplomatic Strategy and Regional Influence
Hochberg discussed the diplomatic moves Saudi Arabia is leading in response to Trump’s plans, highlighting that the kingdom prioritizes diplomacy over military confrontation while seeking to bolster its regional and international standing.
“Saudi Arabia has now become a pivotal power in the Middle East, capable of shaping the future of the region amid rapid geopolitical shifts,” Hochberg added.
Widespread Saudi Rejection of Normalization
Regarding Saudi public sentiment, Hochberg confirmed that approximately 96% of Saudis oppose normalization with Israel, viewing the Palestinian cause as a fundamental issue that must be addressed before any shift in relations with the Israeli occupation.
According to Hochberg, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman understands the significance of Palestinian and Arab public support, and thus, proceeding with normalization could pose a major political risk to the stability of the kingdom.
Strategic Leverage in U.S.-Saudi Relations
Hochberg further noted that the crown prince, who enjoys immense popularity across the Arab world, is in a strong position to exert pressure on the United States to secure Saudi interests.
“Bin Salman’s relationship with Trump and Saudi promises to invest in the U.S. economy grant him significant bargaining power in shaping the new Middle East,” he explained, adding that regional stability and ties with Washington are central to achieving Vision 2030 and executing mega-projects like NEOM.
Saudi Arabia: A Force That Cannot Be Ignored
In conclusion, Hochberg asserted that Saudi Arabia is carefully balancing its strategic regional interests and economic priorities, making it a force that cannot be overlooked in any discussions regarding the future of relations with the Israeli occupation.
