Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has claimed that preparations have begun in coordination with the Americans to implement a plan for the “voluntary displacement” of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, though he did not provide further details.
Smotrich stated that “October 7 was a major disaster, and the responsibility for it lies with the Chief of Staff, the government, and the person leading it,” referring to Benjamin Netanyahu.
He emphasized that the proposed prisoner exchange deal is unfavorable, expressing hope that any ceasefire would be temporary and that the Israeli military would resume fighting in Gaza.
He also criticized Netanyahu for failing to align with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s position on demanding the immediate return of all Israeli captives from Gaza.
Smotrich previously urged Netanyahu to present Trump’s plan for the displacement of Gaza’s Palestinian population to the Israeli security cabinet (the “kitchen cabinet”) for approval.
He recently stated, “My responsibility is toward the State of Israel, its future, and its security, which requires me to oppose giving up on millions of citizens worldwide who will pay a terrible and costly price if this deal continues.”
He continued, “I am facing severe criticism for my stance, including painful and harsh remarks from the families of captives and others, but I remain steadfast in my opposition to the agreement.”
Regarding potential steps to free the remaining captives in Gaza, Smotrich suggested: “We must completely halt the transfer of humanitarian aid to Hamas, and we must permanently occupy Gaza to prevent another massacre,” according to his vision.
