Imam Ahmad recorded a narration from Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) in which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“The Hour will not come until Allah takes His chosen people from the earth, leaving behind ignorant masses who do not recognize what is good and do not reject what is evil.” (Musnad Ahmad)
Similarly, another narration states: “The Hour will not come except upon the worst of people.” (Muslim)
The Last Generations Before the Hour
It has been foretold in various narrations that as the end of times approaches:
-
- Men will become fewer, and women will increase, until one man will be responsible for fifty women.
-
- People will commit immorality openly in the streets, just as animals do.
-
- The name of Allah will gradually disappear from the earth, until there comes a time when it is no longer mentioned.
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“The Hour will not come until it is no longer said on earth: ‘La ilaha illa Allah.'” (Muslim)
This suggests that religious knowledge will diminish, leaving a generation that neither remembers nor upholds the name of Allah.
The Corruption of Mankind
Two primary interpretations exist regarding the statement “until it is no longer said: ‘Allah, Allah.'”
-
-
- Moral Decay – People will stop enjoining good and forbidding evil. There will be no one to remind others to fear Allah or follow His commands. This aligns with another hadith that states: “A time will come when people will not recognize righteousness, nor will they reject wrongdoing.”
-
- Complete Disbelief – A time will come when the remembrance of Allah will vanish entirely, leading to the disappearance of faith from the earth.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also foretold:
“The Hour will not come except upon the most wicked of people.”
This means that when the final moments of this world arrive, only the most corrupt and immoral individuals will remain alive.
The Final Generation and the Coming of the Hour
Another narration reported by Anas ibn Malik states:
“People will only increase in greed, the times will only become more difficult, and the Hour will only come upon the most wicked of people.”
A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to her:
“O A’ishah, your people will be the first of my nation to follow me in death.”
When she asked why, the Prophet (peace be upon him) explained that they would face calamities and hardship before others. Eventually, society will deteriorate to such an extent that the strong will devour the weak, just as locusts consume their prey.
Another narration states:
“The Hour will not come until the most degraded of people remain.”
These narrations depict a time of extreme corruption, moral decay, and spiritual loss, ultimately leading to the arrival of the final Hour upon the most wicked generation.
