Imam al-Bukhari narrated from Malik ibn Isma’il, who reported from Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah, who heard from al-Zuhri, from ‘Urwah, from Zainab bint Umm Salama, from Umm Habibah, from Zainab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with them), that she said:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) awoke from his sleep with a flushed face, saying: ‘There is no god but Allah! Woe to the Arabs from an evil that has drawn near! Today, a breach has been opened in the barrier of Gog and Magog like this’—and Sufyan gestured with his fingers to indicate a small opening. Someone asked, ‘Will we be destroyed while there are righteous people among us?’ He replied: ‘Yes, if wickedness becomes widespread.'” (Bukhari & Muslim)
The Prophet’s Warning of Trials and Tribulations
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned about trials that would descend upon the Ummah. Imam al-Bukhari recorded from al-Zuhri, from Hind bint al-Harith, that Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) woke up one night in distress, saying: ‘Glory be to Allah! What treasures have been sent down tonight, and what tribulations have been revealed? Who will wake the inhabitants of the chambers (his wives) to pray? Many who are clothed in this world will be naked in the Hereafter.'” (Bukhari)
Similarly, Usama ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood on one of the rooftops of Madinah and said: ‘Do you see what I see? Indeed, I see trials falling upon your homes like raindrops.'” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Time will pass rapidly, knowledge will diminish, miserliness will be cast into people’s hearts, tribulations will appear, and there will be an abundance of killing.” The companions asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you mean by killing?” He replied, “Killing, killing!” (Bukhari)
The Deterioration of Society
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Be patient, for no time will come upon you except that the time following it will be worse—until you meet your Lord.” (Bukhari & Tirmidhi)
Likewise, Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“There will be tribulations; the one sitting during them will be better than the one standing, the one standing will be better than the one walking, and the one walking will be better than the one running. Whoever exposes himself to them will be consumed by them. So whoever finds a refuge should seek protection therein.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
The Decline of Trust and Morality
Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Trustworthiness was first placed deep in the hearts of people. Then the Quran was revealed, and they learned from it and from the Sunnah. But then, trustworthiness will disappear. A man will sleep, and it will be removed from his heart, leaving only a faint mark. Then he will sleep again, and it will be taken away completely, leaving only a trace like a blister. People will transact with one another, yet hardly anyone will fulfill their trust. It will be said, ‘There is an honest man in such-and-such a tribe.’ And another will be praised, yet there will be no faith in his heart the weight of a mustard seed.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
The Source of Trials in the End Times
Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood beside the pulpit, facing the east, and said: ‘Indeed, trials will emerge from this direction, from where the horn of Satan rises.'” (Bukhari & Muslim)
These narrations depict the widespread moral and spiritual decline that will characterize the end times. As faith diminishes and trials intensify, the Prophet (peace be upon him) advised believers to remain steadfast, seek refuge in prayer, and uphold their faith amidst the growing corruption of the world.
