American nurse Willie Massay, who volunteered to enter Gaza and treat the victims of the Israeli aggression, announced his conversion to Islam, revealing the reason behind his decision.
Massay, who worked in several hospitals in southern Gaza, shared, “I studied at a religious institute and wanted to become a Catholic priest.”
He continued, “Every time I went to Gaza, I saw the faith of the Palestinians and asked myself, what do I really know about life? About God? What do the people of Palestine know? Imagine a mother or father carrying their child in a plastic bag after Israel has bombed the child, and yet they say, ‘Alhamdulillah’ (Praise be to God)… this is faith.”
He added, “After a short period, I searched on Google for a mosque nearby, went to the mosque, and asked the imam, ‘Can I convert to Islam?’”
Massay emphasized, “This faith cannot be bombed by Israel’s bombs.”
Massay was one of five American medical volunteers who entered Gaza on a medical mission. He said, “We served in southern Gaza at Nasser Hospital and the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza.”
Just before his conversion, he gave a lecture on his experiences in Gaza at an event for the United Methodist Church in the U.S., as part of a plan to share the stories he experienced across America.
Massay shared, “I saw many children who had lost limbs. I will never forget the smell of burnt flesh, gunpowder, and blood,” stressing, “I will never be the same man I was before.”
He explained that what he witnessed in Gaza motivated him to begin fundraising for Gaza’s relief efforts. He added, “We will try to bring some of the children we found to the United States, Jordan, or Egypt to help with their treatment costs.”
Massay confirmed that he will continue to share the stories of the people he met in Gaza, saying, “This was my promise to the Palestinian children in Gaza, that I will tell your story.”
