Israeli opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yair Lapid has issued a stark warning based on what he described as “unambiguous intelligence,” claiming that Israel is on a direct path toward “another catastrophe — this time from within.”
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Lapid stated:
“The levels of incitement and madness are unprecedented. The red line has been crossed. If we don’t stop this, there will be a political assassination — perhaps more than one. Jews will kill Jews.”
He further warned that senior figures in Israel are now under threat of political violence, noting that current Shin Bet (Shabak) chief Ronen Bar is among those receiving explicit threats.
“Ronen Bar should have resigned after the October 7th failure,” Lapid added. “But according to intelligence reports, we are heading toward a disaster — and this time, it won’t come from Gaza or Iran, but from within our own borders.”
Lapid directed sharp criticism at the current government, saying, “Since October 7, those in power have fueled this atmosphere. The inciters must be stopped. We are in a dangerous phase.”
He called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “silence his ministers and his media mouthpieces,” and to “empower the Shin Bet fully to confront internal threats. Otherwise, the next catastrophe will stem directly from this climate of incitement.”
Lapid emphasised that Israel’s internal fractures could jeopardise its ability to confront external threats:
“We cannot face Hamas and Iran while tearing ourselves apart from within. The Shin Bet must be granted full authority.”
He warned that the rhetoric coming from the government itself is destabilising the foundations of Israeli democracy:
“This isn’t happening in a vacuum. The incitement is inspired from the top — directly from the government.”
The opposition leader referred to a recent official statement by the ruling Likud party accusing Ronen Bar of “turning parts of the Shin Bet into a private militia for the deep state.”
“Such statements are dangerous,” Lapid said. “They know exactly how their words will influence certain followers.”
Anticipating counterclaims that Netanyahu himself is facing incitement, Lapid replied:
“Yes, there is incitement against the prime minister too — and that must stop. Anyone who incites violence should be arrested. But let’s not fall into the trap of false equivalence. The ultimate responsibility lies with the one elected to lead. The one who governs is responsible for what happens under his rule.”
