The Yemeni Houthi movement has warned of what it described as preparations by the United States to launch a ground military operation in Yemen, cautioning that such a move could “ignite a total regional explosion.”
Speaking in Sanaa on Sunday during a meeting with Mari Yamashita, the Acting Head of the UN Mission to Support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA), Houthi Foreign Minister Jamal Amer said the recent U.S. airstrikes on the Ras Isa oil port, which targeted paramedics and civilians, amounted to “a full-fledged war crime that must be investigated.”
Amer further noted, as reported by the Houthi-affiliated Saba News Agency, that “American airstrikes, especially in frontlines and coastal areas, indicate a scorched-earth strategy aimed at preparing for a ground invasion that would blow the situation wide open.”
He called on UN Secretary-General António Guterres to intervene urgently “before the situation spirals out of everyone’s control.”
The United States has not yet issued any comment on Amer’s statements.
On Thursday night, U.S. warplanes bombed the Ras Isa oil terminal in western Yemen’s Hodeidah province, killing at least 80 people and wounding 150 others, including port workers and emergency medics, according to the Houthis’ Health Ministry. The death toll remains provisional.
The U.S. military later confirmed the strike, claiming it targeted a fuel facility used by the Houthis to “undermine their economic capacity.”
According to official Houthi figures, between March 15 and Saturday, the U.S. conducted hundreds of airstrikes on Yemen, killing 205 civilians and injuring 406 others — the majority of whom were women and children. These numbers do not include casualties among Houthi forces.
The surge in American attacks follows direct orders from U.S. President Donald Trump, who reportedly commanded his military to carry out a “major offensive” against the Houthis and threatened to “completely annihilate” the movement.
Despite the threats, the Houthis have continued to launch retaliatory strikes on Israeli targets and vessels in the Red Sea heading to Israeli ports, in response to the resumed genocide in Gaza since March 18.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel — with full U.S. support — has waged a brutal war on Gaza, killing and injuring nearly 168,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Over 11,000 others remain missing under the rubble.
