The term Dajjal comes from the root word dajl, meaning deception and falsehood. The Dajjal is an individual who will emerge in the end times, falsely claiming divinity. Allah will allow extraordinary feats to occur through him, intensifying his trial upon humanity. His emergence will shake faith and cause confusion, dividing people into three groups:
-
- Those who believe in him and follow him, whether out of conviction, desire, or fear.
-
- Those who reject him and flee from his trials.
-
- Those who reject him and resist his deception.
All prophets warned their nations about the Dajjal, and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provided extensive details regarding his danger to people’s faith. The Prophet described his physical appearance, deceptive miracles, followers, duration on Earth, and how he will be killed, all to safeguard the Muslim Ummah from doubt and deception.
The Prophet’s Warning Against the Dajjal
Though the Dajjal will appear in the end times, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the prophets before him warned their people about his great trial. The Prophet’s warnings were so serious that he equated seeking refuge from the Dajjal’s fitnah (tribulation) with seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave. This highlights the severity of his deception, which will cause people to doubt their very faith and belief in Allah.
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would supplicate:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, from the punishment of the Fire, from the trials of life and death, and from the tribulation of the False Messiah (Dajjal).” (Bukhari)
Similarly, Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) addressed the people, praising Allah and warning:
“Indeed, I warn you about him (the Dajjal), and there was no prophet who did not warn his people about him.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) further emphasized the gravity of this fitnah, stating:
“From the creation of Adam until the Hour is established, there is no matter more serious than the Dajjal.” (Muslim)
The Dajjal’s Location and Timing
According to the narration of Tamim al-Dari in Sahih Muslim, the Dajjal has been present since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), possibly even before that. He is currently imprisoned on an island, awaiting Allah’s decree to be released near the end of times. His emergence will occur during an era of widespread trials, wars, and religious ignorance.
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) told his companions:
“The Muslims will conquer a city, part of which is on land and part in the sea. Allah will grant them victory, and they will rejoice in the spoils. Suddenly, they will hear a cry: ‘The Dajjal has emerged!’ They will abandon everything and return immediately.” (Muslim)
In another narration, Hudhayfah ibn Asid (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) once found his companions discussing the Day of Judgment. He said:
“The Hour will not come until you see ten major signs before it: the smoke, the Dajjal, the Beast, the rising of the sun from the west, the descent of Jesus, son of Mary, the emergence of Gog and Magog, and three major landslides—one in the east, one in the west, and one in the Arabian Peninsula. The last of these signs will be a **fire that emerges from Yemen, driving people to their final gathering place.” (Muslim)
Scholars have differed regarding the exact chronological order of these signs. However, many Islamic scholars, including Imam Al-Qurtubi, have stated that the first of these signs will be the emergence of the Dajjal. He wrote in At-Tadhkirah:
“Indeed, the first of the signs will be the appearance of the Dajjal.”
Conclusion
The Dajjal’s emergence is one of the most severe trials mankind will face. His deception will be unparalleled, shaking the faith of many. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provided extensive guidance to protect the Ummah, emphasizing supplication, knowledge, and steadfast belief in Allah.
The appearance of the Dajjal is a clear indicator that the final Hour is near, and understanding his role in Islamic eschatology strengthens the believer’s awareness and resilience against his deception. The best protection remains faith, knowledge, and adherence to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
