The Dajjal is a man from the descendants of Adam, whom Allah created as a trial and test for humanity in the end times. Many will be led astray by him, while others will be guided aright, for only the corrupt and sinful will succumb to his deception.
His Origins and Characteristics
It has been narrated by several companions, including Umar ibn Al-Khattab, Abu Dharr, and Jabir ibn Abdullah, that the Dajjal was identified as Ibn Sayyad. However, the most correct opinion is that Ibn Sayyad was merely a minor deceiver among many false claimants, while the greatest Dajjal is the one mentioned in the well-known hadith of Fatimah bint Qays about Tamim al-Dari’s encounter with the Beast (Jassasah).
Imam Ahmad recorded a narration where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described the Dajjal’s birth:
“The parents of the Dajjal will remain childless for thirty years. Then they will be blessed with a one-eyed son, the most harmful and least beneficial person. His eyes will sleep, but his heart will never rest.” (Musnad Ahmad)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also described his parents:
-
- His father will be a tall and bulky man, with a prominent nose resembling a beak.
-
- His mother will be a heavy-built woman with large breasts.
His Appearance and Rise to Power
The Dajjal will emerge from the Jewish quarter of Isfahan, leading 70,000 armed Jews, along with Tartar warriors and people from Khorasan. He will first present himself as a powerful ruler, then claim prophethood, and finally declare himself divine. Many among the ignorant and weak-minded will follow him, while those whom Allah guides will resist him.
The Dajjal will conquer city after city, fortress after fortress, and region after region, leaving no land untouched except Makkah and Madinah, which Allah will safeguard from his entry.
He will remain on Earth for forty days:
-
- One day will feel like a year.
-
- One day will feel like a month.
-
- One day will feel like a week.
-
- The rest will be like regular days.
His False Miracles
Allah will allow extraordinary events to occur at the hands of the Dajjal to test people’s faith. These include:
-
- Bringing forth rain and causing crops to grow.
-
- Reviving the dead (only appearing to do so, through illusion).
-
- Controlling provisions and wealth.
-
- Making fire appear as water and water appear as fire.
While these deceptions will mislead the disbelievers, the believers will recognize them as mere illusions, strengthening their faith in Allah.
The Final Confrontation: The Return of Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him)
The Dajjal’s reign of deception will end when Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) descends at the eastern minaret of Damascus. The believers will gather under Isa’s leadership, marching towards the Dajjal, who will be heading towards Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem).
At Afiq Pass, the Dajjal will begin to flee. However, Isa (peace be upon him) will catch him at the Gate of Ludd (Lod in modern-day Palestine) and kill him with his spear.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Isa, the son of Mary, will kill the Dajjal at the Gate of Ludd.” (Tirmidhi & Musnad Ahmad)
When confronted, the Dajjal will begin to dissolve like salt in water, his false powers vanishing before Isa (peace be upon him), proving to all that he was nothing more than a grand deceiver.
Conclusion
The emergence of the Dajjal is among the greatest trials that humanity will ever face. His deception will be vast, and only those who remain firm in faith and seek Allah’s protection will be saved. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned repeatedly about the Dajjal and encouraged his followers to recite Surah Al-Kahf, seek refuge in Allah, and hold steadfast to the truth to protect themselves from his fitnah.
May Allah protect us from the trials of the Dajjal and grant us steadfastness in faith. Ameen.
